1. The User Lists: User32.mdb in
2.2, Starspell User Details.mdb in 2.3. To migrate class lists, rename the
existing 2.2 User32.mdb to Starspell User details.mdb and replace the same
file on the server for the new installation.
2. The Word Lists: Starsp32.mdb in
2.2, Starspell Wordlists.mdbin 2.3. This is not so simple because the
structure of the Word Table within the database has changed. Only to be
attempted if teachers have made many custom lists. Don't rename the database
this time, but open both in Access, and for each table of the new database,
append all info from the old database starting from the last common indexno./line.
If teachers have recorded their own speech or added their own
pictures, then every additional record in the WordPath Table in the old
database must be copied into the appropriate columns of the Word Table in the
new database. Important to make sure the recorded sound files don't disappear
in the upgrade.

How do I transfer my own word-lists from one computer to another? On stand-alone machines, your word-lists (and all the word-lists) are kept in a database file called Starspell Word Lists.mdb in the C:\Program Files\Fisher-Marriott Software\Starspell22\Database folder. Find this file and copy it on a floppy. Replace the file of the same name in the second computer. I have difficulty installing StarSpell 2.3 on Windows NT4. Like all new software using InstallShield Express version 3.5.3 or later, Starspell needs the Microsoft Windows Installer Engine version 2.0. You need to update your operating system with NT4 Service Pack 6 or later. Windows 95 – "Setup has run into a conflict with a running application", although there are no running applications on the taskbar. Your computer is set up to run an application in the background, typically Microsoft Office. Hold down the Ctrl and Alt Keys and press the Delete key. A window appears with a list of all the running applications. Some of these such as Explorer or Systray are used by Windows, but a program like Microsoft Office is not needed and will interfere with the installation. Delete or rename the files in C:\Program Files\…\Fisher-Marriott Software\Starspell22\Database and run Setup again. Starspell 2001 and StarSpell 2.2 Should we upgrade from Starspell 2001/2.2? The main reason to upgrade from Starspell 2001 or 2.2 is if you are finding networking problems having upgraded your network. We do not recommend that 2001 or 2.2 should be installed on present day networks. Speaking Starspell Should we change from Speaking Starspell? If you are still using the original Speaking Starspell, StarSpell 2.4 is a very significant development. The organisation of the word-lists has been greatly improved. Each word has its own context sentence, written and spoken. It is much simpler to add your own lists. Record-keeping is much improved. Worksheets can easily be produced from the material. We cannot guarantee that Speaking Starspell is fully compatible with the latest versions of the Windows operating system. |
